CopyRight Kenya

The GoDown Arts Centre plays an important role in building capacity among Kenyan creatives in the area of intellectual property rights.  A key part of this effort entails supporting artists in safeguarding their intellectual property and championing their right to earn a dignified living from the sweat of their brow.

Promoting innovation, research, and development

In the creative economy, intellectual property protection is crucial to creating a suitable environment that promotes innovation, research, and development. Rapid advancement in technology has accelerated the free and often illegal exchange of IP protected assets. Now more than ever before, creative individuals and businesses need to be well equipped with the necessary information regarding their IP rights. Copyright is one of the IP rights available to creatives.

The GoDown Arts Centre has made substantial investments of time and resource in building awareness and capacity in copyright among members of the creative sector. The Copyright X: The GoDown, a course run in partnership with the Harvard Law School, has been the main training programme attending to copyright. However, The GoDown also builds capacity in copyright through its annual Creative Economy Course. Furthermore, The GoDown is also the implementing partner of ArtXchange Creative Entrepreneurship Course spearheaded by the Committee for the Development of People (CISP).
