On 16th May 2022, presidential aspirant Raila Odinga unveiled his running mate, Martha Karua, at a pomp-filled event at the KICC grounds in Nairobi. In preparation for the day, his team approached the collective management organizations to acquire licenses to play music as part of their campaign throughout the campaign period.

The GoDown Arts Centre plays an important role in building capacity among Kenyan creatives in the area of intellectual property rights. A key part of this effort entails supporting artists in safeguarding their intellectual property and championing their right to earn a dignified living from the sweat of their brow.

In the creative economy, intellectual property protection is crucial to creating a suitable environment that promotes innovation, research, and development. Rapid advancement in technology has accelerated the free and often illegal exchange of IP protected assets. Now more than ever before, creative individuals and businesses need to be well equipped with the necessary information regarding their IP rights. Copyright is one of the IP rights available to creatives.
The GoDown in the space of Copyright

The GoDown Arts Centre has made substantial investments of time and resource in building awareness and capacity in copyright among members of the creative sector. The Copyright X: The GoDown, a course run in partnership with the Harvard Law School, has been the main training programme attending to copyright. However, The GoDown also builds capacity in copyright through its annual Creative Economy Course. Furthermore, The GoDown is also the implementing partner of ArtXchange Creative Entrepreneurship Course spearheaded by the Committee for the Development of People (CISP).
